Jake babysitting! In Nov of 2000 my wife and I took a Ridgeback from the Rescue Society, his name was Jake. He was a 10 month old pup. I'm very sad to say that he died on Friday the 19th October 2012. He death was very quick and painless, he died in my arms and seemed to just fall asleep. He had a very short illness and was unwell for less than a week.

Over the 12 years we had him we have started a family and my daughter Freya is now 9 and my son Alexander is 6. They have known Jake all of their lives. He has been a constant feature and they are finding it very strange without him.

He was my constant companion, so I am feeling the loss even more deeply. I am the Director of the Bamburgh Research Project, based at Bamburgh Castle in Northumbria. We get a huge amount of media exposure. If you ever see a Ridgeback on Time Team, Meet the Ancestors or anything vaguely archaeological, it will be Jake. He has to be the most filmed Ridgeback ever.

JakeDuring the life of our excavations Jake met thousands of people and was universally liked. He will be missed by a huge amount of people and I have had hundreds of texts, calls and emails commiserating he was truly popular. He had an interesting, exciting and very fulfilling life. He travelled a great deal and has been almost everywhere I have in the last 12 years.

I would like to thank the Ridgeback Rescue Society for allowing us the privilege of knowing Jake. He was the very best of dogs. He was my friend. I will miss him immeasurably.
